Mistborn - August Thieves
As long as Wordek can remember he has been alone, his family was killed in one of the many raids on the Terris, he survived because he was out playing soldier when the attack came. He had just turned 10 at the time and received his first personal weapon from his family. He was given a simple dagger and told to go and learn how to use it if it was needed. When he saw the group of soldiers with an Inquisitor come into town all he could do was just watch in horror, his mind broke when he looked upon the Inquisitor and he blacked out, when he came-to his entire village was nothing more than a smoldering ruin rank with blood and burning flesh. Even with his mind knowing that there couldn’t be anyone who had survived such a massacre his body, seemingly possessed of its own accord, led him through the winding mess of dismembered bodies, burning houses, and shattered earth to the location of his home. Staring at the mangled bodies of his mother, father, brother, and 2 sisters caused him to breakdown, he just lay there among the bodies wishing that he had been killed along with everyone else. When his body had reached the limits and was about ready to pass into oblivion it switched to auto-pilot survival mode and he was without conscious thought for an indeterminate amount of time, while he dealt with his current fractured reality. When he finally started to return to the world around him, he couldn’t remember what had happened or even where he was, all he knew was that his name was Wordek and that he had to get stronger and bring down the Inquisition. Realizing that he was a rather large for his age and that he seemed to be rather good with the sword that he had, but couldn’t remember where he got it, Wordek started to train even harder and try to take on larger challenges.
He started wandering and among the populous of the next town he found a “mentor” who taught him how to fight a person, how to understand the movements of large and small forces, how to be observant to everything going on and see the hidden meanings, he was also taught how to integrate himself among normal people and play the part of a guard or soldier. He spent the next several years working with his “mentor” as a sword for hire, they would take on even some of the most challenging tasks and somehow not only manage to survive but also succeed. After he turned 25 he started taking on some of the easy to moderate tasks by himself and learn more of the tricks necessary to survive in this world as a warrior. Around the time he turned 28 he found a lovely lady who was not only willing to put up with him but also made him feel like a better person and want to strive to improve his lot in life. They were married and traveled around to find a nice location to settle down, finding one in a rather large city he started to offer his service to the nobles as a guard or a mercenary. He has lived this way for the last 4 years always keeping an eye out for any form of danger or threat that may affect his family, this being his driving focus in all that he does. His wife is the only thing that keeps the nightmares away.
